The Oil Guys want Renewable Energy

.

Oil & Gas Executives
Want Focus on Renewable Energy

In a survey oil executives indicate they want government involvement in supporting the development of renewable energy sources that they say is necessary to alleviate the problem of declining oil reserves.

The survey done in April 2007, showed 25% of the respondents said that at least 75% of government funding for energy should be directed into the renewable sources sector and 44% said that at least 50% of national funding should be allocated in the same way.
The vast majority surveyed 82% said declining oil stock were the main concern.

Even the oil and gas companies are now sending out a clear signal that intervention is needed.

These guys are keen to see renewable energy sources becoming mass produced, but some 60% say that will not be possible by 2010. Of those that believe it will happen, 18% say that ethanol is the most viable for mass production, 13% indicate biodiesel.

60% of the oil execs believe that the decline in oil reserves is irreversible.

The Irish Property Bubble

.

The Bubble will BURST!

I am again tempted to write leakage material outside the general parameters of this blog. What has sparked this rant is a news item on EuroNews about squatters in Barcelona.

The phenomena of squatting has grown along with the drastic rise in property prices coupled with a growing number of vacant properties. Squatting in Barcelona is a growing movement with its own theatre, newspaper and community centre.

This rang immediate alarm bells in my head.

The property situation in Ireland is much the same. With 25% of newer homes are vacant why? House prices in Ireland are up to 60% above real values why?

The situation is almost at the critical mass point, like a nuclear reactor where the control rods have been removed and the mass of uranium exceeds fission starting levels and the whole thing is set to explode like Chernobyl.

What are the factors.

IMHO I see the elements as follows:
1. The dispossessed, the young couples who cannot afford the artificially inflated house prices. 2. The property speculators who have money to buy and speculate on many homes keeping the prices inflated and keeping the properties out of use. 3. Lack of proper Government controls. 4. Lack of proper housing initiatives by the government.

IMHO a Squatters Movement would be Justified Morally in Ireland

I am amazed there has not been a radical seizure of empty speculative properties in Ireland by squatters. They have every rational justification for so doing. The housing situation is a disgrace and an embarrassment to the country. it has made the rich into the super rich, while denying homes to the less well off. One in one hundred 1% of Irish are millionaires - I would only guess that many of these have made the money on property speculation.

It is about time to place a punishing tax on second homes and on property speculation. It is also time for a MASSIVE housing plan for Ireland.

Ireland is a country for the rich, not the poor.

We the Irish have detached ourselves from our history and our Christian past to become "empire builders" within our own land. The Irish empire consists of property and money. The new peasants, fuzzy-wuzzies and wogs of this Irish "Empire"are the poorer Irish. Some Irish are also empire building overseas with this property fever.

Slavery in Ireland

There are two forms of slavery being perpetrated in Ireland at this time.

1. The inexcusable sex trade where children are trafficked into and through this country, currently over 300 non-national children on the missing list in Ireland. This is a total disgrace to ireland.

2. The young couples who sign up essentially as indentured slaves for 20 to 30 years of their lives in order to get a house to live in. They are borrowing sometimes at 100% mortgages and amounts equal to a 15 full years salary. If the slightest thing goes wrong with the economy or with their health - they will end up in negative equity and financially enslaved for the rest of their lives.

And there was I thinking that slavery was outlawed in the civilized world!!!

The current situation is immoral and cannot be allowed to last.

CFL bulbs

.

Popular Mechanics recently published an article about CFLs on their website that reaches some startling conclusions.

The conclusions were based on measurements of colour temperature, brightness and wattage; and observations by three of their staff and a lighting expert:

Even though the incandescent bulbs measured slightly brighter than the equivalent CFLs, the testers didn’t see any dramatic difference in brightness.

What was a revelation and a surprise was when it came to the overall quality of the light, all the CFLs scored higher than the incandescent control bulb. In other words, the new fluorescent bulbs aren’t just better for both your wallet and the environment; they actually produce a better quality of light.

CFLs use about 70% less electricity than ordinary bulbs. The average modern home has about 40 ordinary light bulbs in total. Some are lit for longer periods than others, but on average — replacing forty 75-watt incandescent bulbs with CFLs would realistically save over €45 a year. Remember also that CFL bulbs last up to 5 years or more while ordinary bulbs have a life of a year or less – that means CFLs pay for themselves twice over in their lifetime.

Irish Doctor Death

.

Ya -Ya -Ya I know I know - - This is supposed to be a Renewable Energy Blog. I just have to have a rant at the Irish hospital consultants. These highly paid people who earn on average 10 times more that the ordinary worker, their salary is in the region of €200,000 per year or €3846 per week, are going to hold the Irish public to ransom in an even more despicable and low handed move than any ESB worker. These poor consultants are not happy with the salary and deal they have, poor guys we should all pass the hat around for them!!!

They are about to take industrial action to disrupt essential medical services because of:

1. Greed.
2. Irresponsibility.
3. Professional Arrogance.
4. Total Disregard for the public.
5. Professional Misconduct.

This action, if carried out, would earn them the undisputed world title of Doctor Death.

They have already the reputation half earned by their ability to help spread MRSA in Irish hospitals, making Ireland hospitals among the most dangerous in the world.

ESB Workers Threaten the Nation Again

.

.

ESB Workers Declare Jihad on Irish Nation

I was saying recently that I felt it is time to scrap the ESB. The workers would seem to agree with the idea and have set about self destruction by declaring a Jihad against the Irish people in an effort to blackmail the Irish Government into maintaining the Frankenstein Monster of an inefficient, badly run, overpriced state monopoly that is the ESB.

The worker say they will hold the security, safety and economic well-being of the Irish people and the nation itself to ransom by causing power blackouts. Thus putting lives at risk, jobs at risk and the ecomomic wellbeing of the country at risk.

The best thing ever to happen to telephones and communication in Ireland was the scrapping of Telecom Eireann. Now it is time to hunt and destroy this ESB monster.

This is WAR!!!

LEDs Leading Lighting

.

75% of Commercial Lighting
will be LED by 2030

Some estimates put the new form of lighting using LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes at 75% of all commercial lighting by the year 2030 - replacing CFLs, halogen and other types of lights.

There are millions of lamps lighting 24x7 in office buildings, hospitals, shopping malls, hotels etc. It is easy to see whay commercial buildings account for nearly half of total energy consumption for lighting against a quarter for homes.

CFL bulbs (Compact Florescent Lamps) are a big improvement over the ancient technology of filament lamps which were the first type of electric lamp ever made. LED or Light Emitting Diode lamps are that more efficient again than CFLs over filament lamps plus they have the huge advantage of lasting for 15 years or more without maintenance or replacement. Unlike CFLs they can also be dimmed, changed in colour and are virtually unbreakable.

One big installation of LED lamps is at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas where they replaced halogen lamps. This change has cut the annual energy costs from $18,000 to $1,900 Wow that must be a worthwhile saving.

British Airways London Eye replaced fluorescent with an LED system, eliminating former maintenance costs and requirements while gaining the ability to produce spectacular colour effects.

LED String Lamps by Philips

The idea that LEDs are still relegated to flashlights, taillights and electronic gadgets is a misconception. Some major landmarks, towers, and bridges around the world, and the world's largest spherical building are all lit by LED lights. LED lighting is one of the most versatile, safe, economical and long lasting types of lighting currently available.

New World of LED Lighting

.

New Ultra Efficient
High Power LED lamps
the next generation in lighting technology

Saving energy and cuting down on carbon emissions got a boost recently from Osram who have produced a new type of very hight efficiency lighting. The edited techno-speak from Osram reads:

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors presents its first coldwhite LED to achieve more than 1000 lumen. This means it is brighter than a 50 W halogen lamp, making it ideal for a wide range of everyday applications. Samples of the new OSTAR Lighting LED will be produced in the next three months. Market launch is planned for summer 2007. (They don't indicate the price these things will sell at)

The LED is equipped with six closely packed 1 mm² high-power chips giving high luminance. What this means is that a single OSTAR Lighting with a 38° reflector is all that is needed to illuminate a desk with more than 500 lux (a good amount of light) from a height of two meters. OSTAR is also settings new standards in efficiency, producing 75 lm/W from an operating current of 350 mA. Here is a link to their site with some more news on the new type of lighting:

Send me a sample please guys when they are ready!!!!

Full a Steorn

.
FULL A STEORN
Steorn Has Missed another Deadline

Last August Steorn caused a stir by placing a huge advert in the Economist claiming to have invented a "free energy" machine that would power everything from mobile phones to whole cities.

Steorn has had a "jury" of 22 scientists testing it's machine for over 3 months. It missed it's own set deadline today for giving some announcement on viability by placing a completely inept and useless pseudo-statement on it's web site. It had already outlined the magneto-mechanical nature of it's "motor"and stated it's .5 watt per cubic cm size to power ratio.

Guys - Either the darn thing works or it doesn't, and 22 boffins playing with a toy for 3 months should be able to say if it is viable or not. If it works say so - if it doesn't fess up now.

Here is the promised Steorn announcement awaited for over 3 months:

Technical Specifications

Orbo is based upon the principle of time variant magneto-mechanical interactions. The core output from our Orbo technology is mechanical. This mechanical energy can be converted into electrical energy using standard generator technology either by integrating such technology directly with Orbo or by connecting the mechanical output from Orbo to the generation technology. The efficiency of such mechanical/electrical conversions is highly dependent on the components used and is also a function of size.

Orbo technology is subject to continuous development. This development is focused on improving the manufacturability of the technology, production costs and power density. Orbo was initially developed as using stop-start mechanisms (with a power density of 0.5 Watts per cm3), Steorn is currently finalizing the development of constant motion systems and a significant improvement in power density is anticipated.

Steorn & Global Warming

.

Steorn & Global Warming
There is a current sense of holding one's breath
in anticipation of both the BAD and the GOOD.

On the one hand there are the dire predictions of the scientists about the effects of global warming. This coupled with the Al Gores horror movie adds up to producing a general sense of unease, dread and anxiety.

On the good side of the anticipation scales, are the various "save the earth energy sources" news items. Not least among these was the story last year that the Irish company Steorn had invented an all magnet "Over Unity" perpetual motion generator.

But sad to say, Steorn has missed a March 31st deadline for announcing the first series of tests and evaluations by an "independent" jury/panel of scientists. Why such a deadline should be missed would tend to lead one to question yet again the validity of their claim of "Over Unity" energy generation. Yet there is a persistant and nagging sense of hope, like a child's anticipation of Santa's visit at Christmas or of a fairy godmother's magic, which outlasts all the failed science, the scams, and the failed-to-run projects that have made the news in recent years.

Some of the real science good-news stories that hold promise are mainly centred around the use of alternative fuels such as bio-diesel and bio-mass energy generation.
