CFL bulbs (Compact Florescent Lamps) are a big improvement over the ancient technology of filament lamps which were the first type of electric lamp ever made. LED or Light Emitting Diode lamps are that more efficient again than CFLs over filament lamps plus they have the huge advantage of lasting for 15 years or more without maintenance or replacement. Unlike CFLs they can also be dimmed, changed in colour and are virtually unbreakable.
One big installation of LED lamps is at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas where they replaced halogen lamps. This change has cut the annual energy costs from $18,000 to $1,900 Wow that must be a worthwhile saving.
British Airways London Eye replaced fluorescent with an LED system, eliminating former maintenance costs and requirements while gaining the ability to produce spectacular colour effects.
